Even as a six-year-old, some part of me knew that curly haired girls were worth pursuing as friends. I latched onto Kate Land early, fell in love all over again in first grade when I witnessed her mother demo paper making, and 20 years later my opinion of them both as magic women remains unchanged.
Four years ago, Kate and her partner Corey, a printmaker & sculptor who I happened to study alongside while completing my undergrad degree in sculpture, bought two abandoned houses in the heart of the Indiana Dunes and started Calumet Artist Residency. Their property is so very Swiss Family Robinson is all the best ways, and they've been kind enough to keep me for a week.
UPDATE: Calumet Artist Residency was recently featured on Design Sponge! Even more photos of their space and more info about their endeavor to revitalize the Miller Beach community of Gary, IN here.
"The property itself has 85 steps that lead up to the two houses, which are situated next to a land trust. The mid-century buildings, constructed in 1950 and 1965, were in terrible shape when Kate and Corey found them. Built at the top of a hill, they feel like treehouses with forest canopy eye-level to the first floor." - Annie Werbler via Design Sponge
A Handmade Happening
Join me in Athens, GA this weekend! I'll be set up with the lovely Alex Lutian and 80 other vendors at INDIE SOUTH FAIR for their 8th Annual Holiday Market!
December 6 - 7, 2014
660 N Chase St. Athens, GA
Horse + Hero is the latest venture of Brandy Bourne and Justin Rabuck, the duo behind The Big Crafty and Big Love, events that celebrate Asheville’s independent craft and commerce. Despite still waiting for proper business signage, the brick-and-mortar is part gallery, part gift shop and has no shortage of whimsy in their cultivated selection of glassware, prints, ceramics, and even cupcakes!
Their jewelry selection is a bit bigger now, too, and WORN is thrilled to be in such good company!
After too many summers of hearing the Louisville love of my life talk about her trips to The Flea-Off Market, certain stars have aligned. With a visit planned for this weekend anyway, I couldn't ignore the BBFLEA vendor application that landed in my inbox Monday night. Sure, it's last minute, but so many of my better moments find me caught off guard a bit...
Looking forward to a wide variety of vendors, plenty of Bluegrass Brewing Co. beer from the source, and hearing what Louisville has to say about the latest necklaces! Fingers seriously crossed the Holy Molé Taco Truck shows up and kimchi is on the menu...
As a naive nineteen-year-old, I sold jewelry at the first Pitchfork Music Festival in 2006. The weekend was thrilling & chaotic with sharp waves of encouragement and humility. Eight years and a handful of hiatuses later, I like to think I have a better grip on what it is I do and how it should be done. Returning to Chicago for my first official WORN event feels just right.
Looking forward to some quality down time & dancing with old friends and (fingers crossed) a troop of new ones! Daydreaming about the busy month ahead also gets me hungry for a repeat of Hash's Pork Bubble & Squeak... Here's to hoping there'll be time to squeeze it all in!
FIRST FRIDAY | 2.7.2014 | 7pm - 11pm
The Murphy Arts Center
1043 Virginia Ave, Suite 304, Indianapolis, Indiana
Kyle Krauskopf of Krauskopf Innovations has been kind enough to lend his studio for the soft launch of my jewelry line.
If you're out, stop by & say hi - it's my birthday weekend, so we'll be celebrating accordingly!
